Men too seem designed more forВ otomeВ sensibilities rather than being rough warriors (I wonder if due to Sengoku BasaraвЂ™sВ influence) вЂ“ soВ NobunyukiВ SanadaвЂ™sВ striking white hair andВ sharp edged bladeВ make him stand out, but equallyВ SakonВ ShimaВ is a more gruff andВ rough hero should you prefer that kind of thing. Sure, everyone looks a bit doll-like, but thatВ works well for delicately-featured women likeВ NЕЌВ or LadyВ Hayakawa вЂ“ and even for the more elaborately designed females likeВ KoshoshoВ with herВ perm of orange hair and unique outfit with floating shoulder robes. Like with basically everything Omega Force touches, character modellingВ is absolutely sublime. ItвЂ™s a step down over Next, but certainly more than gets the job done on the hardware.

In terms of Musou ports on Vita, Samurai Warriors 4-IIВ is a good effort that has solid performance, good models and middling environments. There are English subtitles at the same time but with all the action happening on screen, itвЂ™s difficult to keep up with these вЂ“ which makes it hard to follow any story beats while youвЂ™re actually playing the game. One big problem with the game though is there is lots of chatter between the characters during battles and this is all Japanese voice acted. I do know that plenty of whatвЂ™s here is romanticised, but if that makes a more compelling narrative then IвЂ™m all for it. It is still a dense story to get into and thereвЂ™s not enough time spent explaining the world, the events or even the characters in some cases вЂ“ but that doesnвЂ™t mean you canвЂ™t find enjoyment from just experiencing its eventsВ and following what is presented. Now I donвЂ™t claim to be an expert at this time period in Japanese history, so I treat each title like this as an entry-level course вЂ“ in that regard, 4-IIВ is a mixed bag.

ItвЂ™s surprisingly humorous and again endeared me to a character who was otherwise just a stock war general/historical figure to me вЂ“ and that in itself is worthy of praise.

My favourite of the bunch is вЂSparks of RebellionвЂ™ that follows Matsunaga, a jaded man who constantly tries to kill Nobunaga OdaвЂ¦ and constantly fails.

ThereвЂ™s a remarkable amount of content here told between full CG scenes and talking conversation pieces and itвЂ™s the first time in a while that I felt like I really got to know the characters in a WarriorsВ title. YouвЂ™ll then experience the emotional tale of Koshosho in вЂLove & FearвЂ™, in which she loses her true love but finds a new family, culminating in вЂVisions of HopeвЂ™ which follows Mitsunari, a diligent warrior with a sea of hope for the nation put on his young shoulders (plenty more campaigns follow showing the journeys of the side characters in these tales). There are a good number of campaigns here вЂ“ the initial five include вЂClash of WillsвЂ™ that follows the red-armoured warrior Naomasa Li (a new character for this entry), before switching to the Sanada brothersвЂ™ conflict in вЂTrials of TrustвЂ™. While thereвЂ™s still unfortunately plenty of this here, in general I found it a notable step up and I became attached to these people and their plights. This (for me) was a hugely refreshing take as the previous WarriorsВ titles IвЂ™d played looked at the overall war which was often difficult to follow and at times rather boring. Set in the Sengoku period of Japanese history, Samurai Warriors 4-IIВ focuses on the inter-relationships of the warring generals at the centre of eachВ Daimyo as they vie for control of the land.Д¬ompared to its immediate predecessor which followed the war as a whole from a variety of different perspectives, 4-IIВ follows specific people at the centre of the conflict and tells their stories from start to finish.
